Community Prevention Specialist

Owego, NY Owego, NY Full-time Full-time $20 - $21 an hour $20 - $21 an hour Under the direct supervision of the Prevention Services Supervisor and Coalition Project Director, the Community Prevention Specialist (CPS) will be responsible to lead and implement prevention work in schools and communities, provide education one substance misuse, actively promote prevention activities and concepts, and work to engage youth and adults in actions which promote healthy choices.
The CPS will need to commit to broaden their knowledge in prevention education, substance misuse, community health, program implementation and evaluation, needs assessment and data collection, and learn best practices for community coalition work.
The CPS will work with school administration and teachers to provide classroom-based education and environmental strategies within the school community.
Must be able to effectively work with other team members and independently to implement planned strategies.
Approximately 50% of this position will be spent planning and implementing community coalition activities.
The remainder of the time will be spent planning, implementing, and evaluating other prevention strategies with schools and families in Tioga County.
This position requires flexibility for occasional evening and weekend hours.

Strong and confident group facilitation, leadership development, and public speaking skills Demonstration of experience engaging youth and adults in conversations around health/wellness based on the audience needs and style.
Ability to build strong relationships with people from diverse ages, backgrounds, education, and expertise.
Must have strong organization and time management skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including familiarity with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Trello, PowerPoint, and Excel are a must.
Energetic and knowledgeable about adolescents and youth development Ability to produce media advocacy and health communication messages, flyers, power points, PSAs Essential Job Functions:
Collaborate with schools, parent-teacher groups, civic organizations, church groups, and other youth and community organizations to provide information and awareness on substance misuse, risk and protective factors, current drug/alcohol trends, and other pertinent topics.
Network with other prevention and social service agencies within the region to provide comprehensive services, identify needs, and make referrals as necessary.
Participate in alcohol, tobacco, or other awareness campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week, Impaired Driving Prevention Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, etc.
Participate in health fairs, business expos, parades, and other community events for the purpose of providing prevention messages and building coalition capacity.
Assist in providing orientation and information sessions for parents, teachers, staff or administrators in target area school and community sites when requested.
Document all program activities as required and submit program reports and records according to the agency's established deadlines.
Provide in-service training to staff on topics appropriate to expertise, interest, and knowledge.
Attend training, seminars, workshops, and classes to achieve required credentials and continuing education as required by the agency.
Continually recruit and maintain a diverse coalition membership with local, state, and national partners Coordinate activities such as:
needs assessments, evaluating effectiveness of coalition strategies, collect, manage, and analyze community health indicator data.
Assist coalition members in conducting annual strategic planning and assist to develop a comprehensive action plan based on needs-assessment data.
Coordinate and facilitate coalition meetings to effectively communicate with members and promote collaboration, negotiation, and problem solving.
Develop training, reference materials, and workshops for coalition and community members and coalition activities.
Collaborate and work closely with a diverse set of sector representatives and community-based organizations to promote coalition mission, vision, and goals.
Assist with developing marketing and media materials, social media campaigns, commercials, and website content.
Physical Elements Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills of stooping, kneeling, walking, lifting, grasping, pulling, standing, and talking.
Must be able to perform light work involving up to 50 pounds.
Employees may be required to travel.
Cognitive capabilities are needed for objective analysis of varied circumstances.
Required Qualifications / Credentials / Training:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Health, Human Development, or other related field is preferred.
A Valid Driver's License Preferred Experience / Skills / Training:
Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) credential and prior prevention training are preferred.
Experience working with youth in school or community setting is preferred.
Experience in public speaking is preferred, and prior curriculum implementation is a plus.
Experience with creating marketing materials, managing social media accounts, and other advertising or marketing experience is a plus.
